The Small Group may proceed without community input. The Small Group rejected input from the president of the Civic Association who represents the community and is not forthcoming with all historic designation options but is rather laying the groundwork for only one option for Gum Springs. As a result, there is no true community representation on the Small Group and the community is unaware of available options; particularly should the community qualify for more than one designation.
Here is the language rejected by the Small Group:
The New Gum Springs Civic Association is supportive of the project to identify and document the significance of Gum Springs to become a historic or historic overlay district and/or any other potential preservation measure, as appropriate. Therefore, it is incumbent on the Gum Springs Citizens Advisory Group to explain the importance and benefits of the project to the Gum Springs community to include the pros and cons between a historic district and historic overlay district. Special involvement from Gum Springs property and homeowners (those who pay Fairfax County real estate taxes) is required and paramount to the success of the project.
Heritage Resources staff provided a presentation to the community on November 9, 2021. Therefore, the Civic Association is seeking comments from property/homeowners. Results of the survey will be shared with Fairfax County. No identifying items such as name and address will be shared with Fairfax County.
